Holdem Guide

  1. If you  have never played Texas Holdem before, then of course the first thing you should do is learn the rules of the game.
  2. Find an online poker room you feel most comfortable with. Don’t waste your time on searching for poker rooms with best promotions to new players. If you are new to the game, you will very rarely be able to take full advantage of these bonuses.
  3. By now you may probably have discovered that there are several variations of Texas Holdem – limit, no limit, pot limit, heads-up, short-handed, full ring, cash games, sit-and-gos, multi-table tournaments. Try them all and pick your favorite.
  4. Make sure you know all the rules. Unless you are mr. Rainman, it is extremely difficult to learn all the rules just by reading them. The more you play, the more you will discover exceptional situations you never thought would occur. If you don’t know the rules properly, you will be in great disadvantage against those, who do. In order to really learn all the rules, start playing with playmoney, freerolls or with minimum bets. That’s unless you are a millionaire of course.
  5. Once you have played with no or little money for some time, you should move on to microlimits. If you want to become a better player faster, you also need a software to track your progress.
  6. In parallel to playing, you should finish at least one book about general Texas Holdem. There are a lot of people who take time to do this. Without the basics, you probably won’t break even.
  7. If you have done everything right, you should now at least break even at microlimits. If you want to play poker just for fun, then congratulations! – you don’t have to do anything else to enjoy the game. However, if you like the idea of becoming a professional player, then you should start taking it more seriously – you are not the only one out there trying to make a buck playing poker you know. Start with reading another book on poker. This time pick something more specific, say – cash games, tournament poker, you get the idea.
  8. Sign up at a poker forum and start posting and discussing your poker hands.
  9. Once you have accumulated a solid bankroll by playing and winning of course, raise your limit or open one more table and continue multitabling, whichever feels more comfortable.
  10. Repeat the last step until you have reached your physical limit.
